River Irvine Threatens to Burst its Banks

The residents of Irvine's Waterside are bracing themselves yet again as torrential rain swells the River Irvine, which is literally on their doorstep. The rapidly rising water levels are dangerously close to bursting in places alongside the Low Green and Waterside area of the town. Marress Sports Club will also be keeping a very close eye on the situation as any flooding would cause major problems with their rugby pitches. Rugby supporters are therefore advised to check well in advance of any affect this may have on forthcoming fixtures.

There are many vunerable areas along the stretch of the River Irvine, as we know all too well. Last year's events in a retail park near Riccarton, Kilmarnock saw shoppers and cinema goers being evacuated as the river's banks ruptured. Similarly, Kilbirnie had a major clean up operation in August 2008 after the River Garnock's banks burst, flooding many residential homes and business's alike.

The severe weather conditions are set to continue as the BBC Weather Centre have issued a warning that parts of Scotland could see a months rain in 36 hours. A brief break in the weather is expected tomorrow; however, more persistant rain is forecast for the weekend.
